SMSF

SELF MANAGED SUPER FUNDS (SMSF)

SMSF's have $420B of invested funds, they have recently overtaken retail super funds ($360 Billion). This suggests major changes in the superannuation industry.

More importantly, costs to start and run your own SMSF have come a long way. If you select the right operator and trust deed you can now run and invest a SMSF with less fees then a regular retail fund. Further, the real benefit is in the fact that SMSF's can now borrow to purchase property. If you are concerned about a deposit, this may be on-loaned to your SMSF through a contractual agreement. This money may be taken from the equity in your own home, investment property or business. SMSF may indulge in all the typical investments including but not limited to property, shares, managed funds, fixed interest, cash, instalment warrants and exotic investments (collectibles). Remember the sole purpose test means that the member cannot enjoy a direct or indirect benefit from the investments. i.e. No taking a vintage car for a joy ride.

Further, you are not restricted to be a member of one superannuation fund. If you get the right advice there are considerable advantages in being in several funds. Contrary to popular belief your fees will not be doubled as fees are generally commission based.

SMSF's are suitable for a limited number of people, they are particularly good for borrowing to purchase property. They are also more suitable for older age groups that have the required deposit and or equity to on-loan to the super fund.

If you are commercially un-insurable for Income protection, TPD, Trauma and Life Insurance a SMSF may have many benefits for you.

Note: A SMSF is not suitable all of our clients. Financial Advice should be attained from an independent Financial Adviser whether or not you are investing in a SMSF or a standard super fund. Many SMSF Specialists will advise a SMSF structure as they will receive money from your purchase of the trust deed and the ongoing Accounting and Auditing charges. Place yourself in a SMSF arrangement only when appropriate.
